Search for drone pilot licensing requirements and you'll find a table running from Class 1 to Class 4. The dividing line is maximum takeoff weight. Under 250 grams, no license is required; above 250 grams, you need online training; above 2 kilograms, you need a written exam and logged flight experience.

The table is clear enough. But if you're building an FPV drone, one piece is missing: no one tells you how many grams your aircraft actually weighs.

A retail drone has its weight printed right on the box. A 5-inch FPV drone doesn't come in a box. You pick the frame, motors, and battery separately and build it yourself, which means the weight is decided the moment you choose your parts — and doing that math is on you.

The Weight Is Already Decided When You Pick Parts

Finishing the build and then putting it on a scale is doing things backward. By then, you've already spent the money on every part.

Three components drive most of the weight. The frame sets the size of the aircraft, the battery is the single heaviest part, and the four motors come next. Everything else is light on its own, but with more than a dozen other parts bolted on, the total adds up to more than you'd expect.

Here's the trap: the regulation isn't measuring the airframe alone — it's measuring maximum takeoff weight, the weight of the drone as it actually flies, battery installed, camera mounted, everything attached. Leave the battery out of your tally and the whole calculation is wrong.

The Two Thresholds: 250 Grams and 2 Kilograms

There are two thresholds, and what falls between them matters.

Most 5-inch FPV drones land in the middle band — over 250 grams but nowhere near 2 kilograms. It's tempting to conclude, "so I just need the online course," and move on. But two things are worth checking first.

First, 250 grams is a lower bar than it sounds. Even a small 3-inch build can cross it if you pair it with a bigger battery. The only way to know is to add up your parts list.

Second, licensing is only one condition among several. There are places you can't fly even with a license, and altitudes that require separate approval.

FPV Flying Comes With One More Requirement Beyond Licensing

This is where regular drones and FPV drones part ways.

Standard drone flight assumes the pilot keeps the aircraft in sight the whole time. FPV flying means wearing goggles and steering by the video feed the drone sends back — you're not looking at the aircraft at all.

That's why FPV flights require a separate visual observer to keep eyes on the aircraft. Even with a license in hand, strapping on goggles and flying solo falls outside that requirement.

There's a reason this part doesn't turn up in a quick search: licensing information comes from sources covering drones in general, and those sources generally assume visual line-of-sight flight. The conditions specific to FPV never make it into that table.

Getting the Order Right

Here's the order to check things in, starting from the parts-selection stage.

First, build a parts list and add up the weight — battery included.

Second, check which band that number falls into relative to 250 grams and 2 kilograms. If you're close to a threshold, swapping the frame or the battery to stay under it is a real option — one that's only available before you've bought the parts.

Third, once you know your band, check which license it requires. Class 4 means online training; Class 3 or higher means a written exam plus logged flight time — and the prep time is very different between the two.

Fourth, separately from licensing, decide where you'll actually fly. Airspace restrictions are a different axis entirely — get blocked there, and a license won't give you anywhere to fly.

What happens if you follow this order only after the build is already finished? If the weight comes in over 2 kilograms and you don't hold a Class 3 license, you're left rebuilding the aircraft or waiting months to qualify. Do the math before you buy the parts, and that choice is still open to you.
