When Cristiano Amon walked onstage, there was no smartphone in his hand. On June 16, Qualcomm's CEO revealed that the company is currently developing more than 40 AI wearable devices — camera-equipped earbuds, earring-style units, pins, and smartwatches. Rattling off that number, he wasn't describing a simple product lineup. It felt closer to a public declaration of where Qualcomm intends to plant the flag for the computing platform that comes after the smartphone.

In any technology cycle, the chipmaker moves first. And often, its direction is where the outline of the next platform starts to emerge. This was one of those moments.

The Chip in Your Ear: Qualcomm's Two New Products

Alongside the announcement, Qualcomm unveiled two products: the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 2 and the Snapdragon Sound platform.

The AR1 Gen 2 is a chip built for devices like camera-equipped earbuds and smart glasses. The Snapdragon Sound platform is designed to bring on-device AI processing to audio devices broadly. Neither product is sold directly to end consumers. The goal is to get device makers — Meta, Samsung, Sony — building wearables on top of these chips.

The setup echoes how Qualcomm built out the Android ecosystem. In the smartphone era, Qualcomm positioned Snapdragon as the standard chip and let manufacturers compete on top of it. This time, wearables are taking that same seat.

Behind Qualcomm's shift is a stalled smartphone market. Global smartphone shipments have cycled through repeated stagnation and modest recovery since 2016. Wearables, by contrast, are estimated at roughly $95 billion in 2024, with double-digit annual growth projected. For Qualcomm, announcing 40 devices reads as a signal that it's hunting for new terrain in a saturated market.

One more thing stands out. Both new products run on-device AI — meaning inference happens inside the device itself. Where smartwatches and earbuds once functioned mainly as peripherals tethered to a phone, this new design aims for devices that can handle AI functions independently, with no phone required. How much this difference can lower the usability barrier that has long held wearables back is the key variable in this cycle.

When the Platform Shifts, So Does the Format

Every time the technology platform has changed, how people consume content has changed with it. In the PC era, the long-form text article was the dominant format. In the smartphone era, vertical video and short card-style formats took over. Scrolling, tapping, and screen-centered interfaces have been the default frame for content for more than a decade.

If wearables become everyday devices, that frame shifts again. Instead of a screen in front of your eyes, the primary interface becomes voice in your ear, or information overlaid on a lens. Long articles, image-heavy feeds, and scroll-based content don't fit this environment. What emerges instead is short, tightly contextual voice information, real-time guidance, and location-based alerts.

The newsletters and video channels that solo operators and content directors run today may not translate as-is into this environment. That's not a knock on the content itself — it's that format stops landing when it doesn't match the interface. Anyone who has built content optimized for text and images will face added adaptation costs once voice becomes the primary interface for a device.

Here's an interesting wrinkle: solo operators who already run podcasts, audiobooks, or voice-based content face a much lower conversion cost in this shift. Someone who has spent time refining their voice and delivery can carry that content onto a new device with relatively little friction. The quality of audio content isn't determined by voice-processing technology — it's determined by the speaker's structuring ability and density of delivery. I'd argue this is the most overlooked asset for this platform transition.

Google Glass Was Also "the Next Platform" — in 2013

Here, the counterargument deserves an honest hearing. The claim that "the platform after the smartphone is coming, prepare now" has repeated itself every technology cycle.

In 2013, Google Glass emerged as "the next computing platform." At the time, Silicon Valley's confidence in that framing was near-total. But it never cleared the hurdles of battery life, comfort, and social discomfort, and it withdrew from the mainstream consumer market. The metaverse boom traced a similar arc. Oculus headsets sold, but the everyday adoption Mark Zuckerberg predicted never materialized.

Stand next to someone wearing camera-equipped earbuds, and you could be recorded without knowing it. That unease isn't something technology can solve — it's a matter of social acceptance. Even if Qualcomm builds chips to support 40 kinds of wearables, if consumers resist strapping devices to their bodies, the ecosystem never forms.

A chipmaker's ambition and the market's pace of acceptance often move in different directions. Qualcomm's announcement can be read as "a declaration of the post-smartphone era," or just as easily as "an industry's hope while it's still trying to convince the market." Neither reading is entirely wrong at this point.

Why Your Content's Structure Deserves a Check-Up Now

Whether the wearable platform succeeds or fails is still an open question. But preparation isn't about betting on success — it's about checking whether your current structure can absorb a platform shift.

Start by testing your content's "screen independence." Does your newsletter still land when read aloud? Does your YouTube video's core message survive on the audio track alone? This question is as useful for wearable readiness as it is for diagnosing a podcast or audio channel you're already running today. Content that carries without a screen keeps its conversion cost low no matter what device comes next.

It's also worth examining your customer data structure. The core mechanism of wearable AI is figuring out where a person is, what they're doing, and what they'll need next. In that framework, whoever has already been systematically building customer behavior data gets to personalization first. Cleaning up your CRM or customer touchpoint data now remains a useful asset regardless of which platform ultimately wins.

Korea carries a context of its own here. It's one of the countries with the highest smartphone penetration in the world — which means the pace of adoption for whatever comes next could also be fast. Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses have sold more than a million units in the US over the past 12 months. That's not mainstream yet. But the contour of that growth curve is starting to resemble smartphones' early adoption. Just as creators who launched channels in 2011, when YouTube was taking hold in Korea, ended up with millions of subscribers a decade later, those who experiment with format early in a platform's life tend to claim the channel advantage first.

What matters right now isn't "making content for a device you wear on your body." It's confirming whether the content you already have still lands when the format changes.

While Qualcomm's CEO was onstage listing off 40 wearables, this transition had already begun in some consumers' ears. Whoever has already defined their value ahead of their channel stays standing in the same place, no matter how the format shifts.
